🦈🌊Second Sundays - July 2024 🌊🦈

Happy July and Shark Week 🦈 month peeps!

So unfortunately the reading slump is in full swing. 😬 I'm about 1/3 of the way through the June book club pick and half-way through the pick for a new book club at the day job. While I like both books so far, the slog is so very real, so I'm taking far longer than usual to finish these books and peruse my shelves and decide what to read next. That being the case, I'm going to alter the blog a bit and save my "official" book reviews for next month. But not to worry! I still have plenty of things to share. So onward!

☕📚 Currently Reading 📚☕

Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen is the June Cup of Tea Book Club pick. I'm 85 pages in and I truly am enjoying it so far. The language is helping the brain rot of overstimulation and it's fun to see the changes they made for the movie adaptation (my favorite one stars Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman.) Normally I don't read more than one book at a time, but I'll continue to work away at this one for as long as it takes for the mental health value alone.

The entire Discworld series has been on my tbr for years, so when work asked me to start a SciFi/Fantasy book club, this was immediately my first go-to. The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett is certainly an odd one so far. I'm half-way through and I think I'm only understanding part of it. The world-building is some of the most whimsical that I've come across and I do have a slight fondness for at least one of the characters. The utter randomness of some of the details though are leaving me a bit lost. I know I'm missing things - but this definitely has more to do with my reading slump mood than the book itself. I'm pretty sure when I'm done this is going to be a reread when my mind feels like it can focus better.

☕📚 July Book Club Pick 📚☕

Not wishing to hold up my bookish friends any longer than necessary, I have chosen the next book for the Cup of Tea Book Club - The Alchemist by Paolo Coehlo! ☀️

This is another one of those classics that eluded me when it was first released, and after rereading the synopsis, it sounds like a book I need right now, and one I think others might need too. Plus, it's a short one, which my brain definitely needs! 🤯😅

📚 June Book Haul 📚

It was a good month for getting some long-time books on the "to buy" list! There's also a lot of Romantasy in here which wasn't intentional - I'm not much of a fan of romance in my fantasy books - but these stories all sounded good and if I spread them far apart I hopefully won't get burned out on the tropes.

From top to bottom:

  • Dragonfall by L.R. Lam - book 1 of a Romantasy duology about banished dragons coming back to get revenge on humans

  • The Legacy of Orisha Trilogy by Tomi Adeyemi - a Young Adult fantasy series rooted in West African mythology. This one has been on my list for years so now that book 3 has finally come out I had to get it!

  • Voyage of the Damned ARC by Frances White - This one says "Twelve magical Blessings. Twelve days at sea. One chance to stop a killer and save the world." Yeah, I'm in!

  • The Fireborne Blade by Charlotte Bond - a dragon-slayer fantasy novella with a woman knight as the main character - and there's a second book coming too!

  • The Honey Witch by Sydney J. Shields - a cozy fantasy with a "grumpy/sunny" sapphic romance

  • The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett - the first Discworld book which has been on my tbr for decades. Finally reading it!

  • The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin - another classic that has been on my list for decades that I'll finally be getting around to for my work's book club

  • The Wren in the Holly Library by K.A. Linde - a Romantasy that reads " A thief and a monster trapped in a library together" with Beauty and the Beast vibes. And this book might just be taking the cake for the prettiest book on my shelves - basically all the pretty books are Romantasy these days, which I'm learning to get over, but LOOK. AT. IT! 👀😱 (below)

  • Faebound by Saara El-Arifi - another Romantasy, this one about two eleven sisters who get trapped in the fae world
